Pre-release page. Steam Early Access begins November 9, 2026. Data here comes from the Steam page, the demo, official developer posts or dated, credited demo guides, and each page says which version it reflects. We'll update it for the full release.
Reflects the October 2026 demo as documented by Whisper of the House (guide dated October 13). We have not tested this ourselves, and the exact demo build is not established. Early Access starts November 9 and may change controls or values.
The fight in five moves
The three catches documented for the demo share the same core sequence once hooked. Fish still differ: the bait or lure that gets a bite, and how long the fight lasts (a Softgrazer has more Stamina than a Snapper).
- OpposePull the rod against the direction the fish is swimming. Switch sides when it does.
- TireCorrect pulls drain its Stamina meter. Wait for it to empty.
- ReelBring the tired fish toward you. Zero Stamina is not yet a catch.
- Ease offIf Line Tension climbs, stop reeling until it drops. If the fish fights again, go back to step 1.
- Land & keepUse Land Fish when it’s close, then choose to keep it, not release it.
This guide hasn’t verified exact meter thresholds or default key bindings, so it doesn’t give numbers or keys.
Rod, tackle and first cast
According to the October 13 guide, the Simple Rod waits in the Bunkhouse at Betsy and Sons; the traders send you to fetch it after your first night there. If you haven’t reached that point, keep following the opening quests until you get the fishing assignment.
The first fishing spot sits under the Trading Post pier. Interact with it to open tackle selection, pick the rod and bait, aim at the water and cast. With ordinary bait, hold the rod still after it lands. Moving too early can scare the fish off.
The bait for each fish, and the two lures you craft later, are listed in DREADMOOR Fish & Bait.
Mouse or keyboard?
The introductory fishing sequence asks how you want to steer the rod, mouse movement or keyboard, and you can change that later in the settings. The fight works the same either way.
Our suggestion: if a fish that keeps changing direction outpaces your mouse, try switching schemes before deciding you need better gear. The source guide makes the same point about later fish.
Still bait vs. moving lure
The demo has two kinds of fishing spot, and the selection screen labels the fish population. They want opposite things from you before the bite:
Peaceful fish · still bait
- Cast into the fishing area.
- Keep the rod still and wait for a bite.
- Examples: Snapper and Softgrazer.
Predator fish · moving lure
- Find the disturbed surface, the splash zone, and cast inside it.
- Start reeling at once so the lure moves through the water.
- Keep a steady pace the fish can follow: too fast leaves it behind, too still and it loses interest.
- Example: Harpooner on Rainbow Fin.
A still predator lure won’t get a bite. Once the predator does bite, the chase is over and the normal fight below applies.
Draining Stamina
A hooked fish pulls away from you. You wear it down by pulling the rod the opposite way:
- Fish heads left → pull right.
- Fish heads right → pull left.
- Fish turns → turn your pull with it.
Watch the fish rather than holding one side. When the Stamina meter empties, the fish is tired enough to reel, but it can still be a long way out and can recover Stamina during retrieval. When it starts fighting again, stop forcing it: oppose its movement until it tires, then carry on reeling.
Softgrazers have more Stamina than the opening Snappers, so a longer fight is expected and doesn’t mean you picked the wrong bait.
Line Tension and snapped lines
Line Tension is the strain on your line. It rises when you reel against a fish that is still resisting, and when a fish runs too far. At the maximum the line breaks and the fish is gone.
The risky moment is usually near the boat: Stamina is low, you speed up, and one last burst spikes the tension. Give up a little distance instead of the whole fish. Ease off, let the meter fall, tire the fish again, then resume.
Landing and keeping a fish
When the fish is close enough, a Land Fish interaction appears. Landing brings it aboard, but the choice that follows decides whether you keep it. A released fish can’t go toward a contract or the processing machines.
Keep contract catches whole. The traders’ first assignment asks for five Snappers. For what whole fish become at the Grinder and Thresher, see Fish Meat and Chromatic Scales.
When a catch goes wrong

| What happened | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fish swims off before biting | Rod moved while waiting on still bait | Recast and keep the rod still until a fish takes the bait. Details |
| Line snapped and the fish escaped | Line Tension reached its maximum | Ease off reeling as the meter climbs; tire the fish again before the next long pull. Details |
| Stamina hit zero but the fish is still far out | Zero Stamina is not a catch; retrieval is a separate step | Reel it in now, watching the tension meter. Details |
| Fish fights again halfway to the boat | It recovered Stamina during retrieval | Stop reeling, oppose its movement until it tires, then continue. Details |
| Can’t reverse the pull fast enough | Control scheme doesn’t suit the fight | Try the other control scheme in the settings before blaming the rod. Details |
| Predator follows, then turns away | Retrieval too fast, or the lure stopped too long | Cast again with a steadier pace. One failed chase doesn’t mean the lure is wrong. Details |
| No predator reacts at all | Wrong lure, or cast outside the splash zone | Check that the predator lure is equipped and land it inside the disturbed water. Details |
| Landed fish is gone afterwards | Released instead of kept | Read the choice after Land Fish carefully. A released fish can’t be delivered or processed. Details |
| Long fight with a Softgrazer | Bigger Stamina reserve than a Snapper | Normal. Keep the same bait and keep cycling tire → reel. Details |
