Casualties: Unknown: Demo vs Full Game

Everything the developer has confirmed about what changes from the demo to the 1.0 release on November 9. We'll update this page with the official 1.0 patch notes on launch day.

Pre-release page. Launches on Steam November 9, 2026 at 3pm CET (14:00 UTC). Data here comes from the Steam page, the demo and official developer posts, and each page says which version it reflects. We'll update it for the full release.

Status: pre-launch. Everything below comes from the developer's posts and the developer's own 1.0-Pre3 text file. We haven't played the full game yet.

New content

  • Layers 6–11. There are 10 main layers, a shorter 11th layer and an optional bonus ending sequence. See layers.
  • Three endings. "You can beat the game now. In a couple of ways, in fact."
  • Three playable characters. You unlock each one by finishing a run with the previous one. See characters.
  • 40 Steam achievements. The September update said "over 30", and the launch post confirmed 40.
  • Prosthetics. Losing a limb is no longer permanent. There are 3 tiers of prosthesis, and the top tier is better than a normal limb. Repairing and maintaining them works differently from healing. You can now also lose both legs at once.
  • More drill pods, and they're easier to use, because runs can get long.

Balance and quality of life

  • The game should be a little easier overall. Some traps are more clearly telegraphed, certain injuries are less debilitating and combat is less finicky.
  • Later layers were tuned so they aren't too brutal, because losing hours of progress isn't fun.
  • The lockpicking kit works from anywhere in your inventory.
  • Wood block drops are more consistent.
  • Amputating limbs is easier.
  • Brain damage is less punishing.

What the 1.0 text files add

Comparing the developer's demo 7.0.1 text file with the 1.0-Pre3 file for the full game turns up these new names. They may still change before launch.

Spoiler: new names in the 1.0 text
  • 10 new items: Cryogenic core, Earmuffs, Heatfern sponge, Mini flesh rebuilder, Nano-tech scanner, Peg limb, P.E.O. limb, Red foliage, Spiceleaf, Steel prosthesis.
  • 8 new conditions: High pressure, Very high pressure, Barotrauma, Critical barotrauma, Prosthetic limb, Loose screws, Bent prosthesis, Critical material loss. The first four are the tiers of a new barotrauma (pressure) condition.
  • Layer 11 is called "CRIMSON ASCENT" in the 1.0 text and "ASCENT" in the demo text.

Not changing

  • The demo stays on demo 7.0. The developer said it won't be updated, because backporting the changes would be "a giant hassle".
  • Price: $22.99 with a 15% launch discount. See release date.

After launch

On November 9 we'll add the official 1.0 patch notes here and update the crafting, items and conditions pages to the full game.
