Casualties: Unknown Layers

You descend through 11 layers of an alien planet. The demo covers layers 1 to 5, and the full game adds layers 6 to 11. Each layer can also roll a random modifier.

Pre-release page. Launches on Steam November 9, 2026 at 3pm CET (14:00 UTC). Data here comes from the Steam page, the demo and official developer posts, and each page says which version it reflects. We'll update it for the full release.

All 11 layers

Layer names come from the developer's text files: demo 7.0.1 and 1.0-Pre3 for the full game. The September 2026 update describes the structure as 10 main layers, a shorter 11th layer and an optional bonus ending sequence.

What changes as you go deeper

  • Ilmenite only spawns from layer 5 onward (demo 7.0).
  • The First Aid course unlocks once you reach layer 2, and the Crafting course once you reach layer 3 (demo 6.1).
  • Some layer modifiers can't appear on the first layer (demo 7.0).
  • Loot and traps change per layer. The Distance loot multiplier setting multiplies loot density each time you descend, and Distance trap increase adds to trap density each time. See run settings.
  • Each layer has a time limit. The Layer time limit setting is "how long you can stay in every layer before punishment", in minutes.
  • For the full game, the developer added more drill pods and made them easier to use, because runs can get long (September 2026 update).
  • Dying on an earlier layer no longer resets your deepest layer reached (demo 7.0 fix).

Layer modifiers

A layer can roll a modifier that changes its conditions. How often this happens is controlled by the Layer modifier chance run setting. The demo text lists these 11:

ModifierWhat we know
Foggy More fog than usual.
Hot Warmer air than usual.
Scorching Much warmer air than usual.
Cold Colder air than usual.
Freezing Frigid air.
Flooded More of the terrain is under water.
Dried Exposed pools of water are unlikely.
Rainy Water drips from everywhere.
Infested Very high insect activity.
Ionized Nuclear waste on the layer. Since demo 6.0 it also spawns some anti-rad. See radiation conditions.
Solar-struck A solar flare disables your chip for a while, so you lose its readouts.

Modifier summaries are our own paraphrase of the in-game modifier text in demo 7.0.1.

We'll add a guide for each layer, covering hazards, resources and traders, after the full game launches on November 9 and we can check layers 6–11.
